The U.S. National Whitewater Center at Mecklenburg County Historic Tuckaseegee Ford Park

The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) was created through a private-public partnership incorporating the leadership and support of the governments, businesses, foundations, universities and individuals throughout the region.  Mecklenburg County has played a key role in leading the development of the Center in many respects including providing the property for this one of a kind facility.

The USNWC is located at the Historic Tuckaseegee Ford Park.  Mecklenburg County purchased this tract of land approximately over 20 years ago with plans to eventually create a park on the site.  Funding and other obstacles have prevented such a development until partnering with the USNWC. In 2004 the Mecklenburg County Commission unanimously approved a long-term lease for USNWC to privately fund a $40 million dollar development of this wonderful 270 acres along the Catawba River (Duke Energy has also provided a lease to the USNWC for 37 acre Sadler Island which is also included in the Whitewater Center). The partnership between the not-for-profit U.S. National Whitewater Center and Mecklenburg County provides a fiscally sound option for both institutions, as the County will have access to a fully developed recreational facility, while the Whitewater Center can utilize an invaluable property to create this outdoor center.
